In 1961 Bangladesh Government started looking for Nuclear power to boost its Energy sector. A discussion with Canada in 1964, Sweden and Norway were unsuccessful. After the independence of Bangladesh from the Pakistani occupied force the Father of the nation sheik mujibur Rahman asked for soviet union support for Nuclear power in Bangladesh.
Russia supported the proposal but the assassination of Sheikh Mujib buried the nuclear dream of Bangladesh.
But later in 2011 Bangladesh government adopted Nuclear Power Action Plan later in 2009 daughter of Sheikh Mujib , the prime minister Sheikh Hasina started the discussion with the Russian government and on 13 February the two governments signed a memorandum of understanding. Rosatom said they would start construction by 2013.
