Syrian missile strikes near Israeli Dimona nuclear site

Syrian missile that fell near Dimona was a sizeable blast that could be heard in Jerusalem, about 150km (93 miles) away from the site.

According to the Israeli army Syrian anti-aircraft missile landed in the country’s top-secret nuclear reactor, in southern Israel early Thursday, setting off air-raid sirens. Israel’s Dimona nuclear facility is said to have produced nuclear weapons. The Israeli military described the missile that landed as a surface-to-air missile, which is usually used for air defense against warplanes or other missiles. Its suggested that the Syrian missile had targeted Israeli Military aircraft but missed and flew off errantly. Dimona is some 300 kilometers south of Damascus, a long-range for an errantly fired surface-to-air missile.

The Israeli military said that in response to the missile, it launched an airstrike at the battery that launched the anti-aircraft missile. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reported that Israeli missiles hit an air defense base in the town of Dumayr, about 40km (25 miles) northeast of Damascus.
