2019- Disaster in Bangladesh: Overview of Hazard Incidents

2019 is full of natural and man-made disasters in Bangladesh. This year a major Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Fani stricken Bangladesh. Numerous Lightning strikes and storms bettered the rural communities. Many loos of lives are counted for natural disasters. Many fire incidents took the lives of more than 200.

January, 2019

22 persons were Missing In Boat Capsize,

In January 2019 many man-made hazards were reported 13 incidents of fire injured five persons and caused a monetary loss of approximately BDT 17 crore. five incidents of boat capsize was the most devastating hazard of the month. The incidents caused the death of three persons and 22 persons

February, 2019

Temperature below 8.2 C , Fire killed 85 Ligtning killed 15

in February 2019 The lowest temperatures of these months were 8.2°C, 8.4°C, 8.9°C, 9.3°C, 8.2°C and 8.4°C in Jashore, Panchagarh, Rajshahi, Moulvibazar, Rajshahi & Chuadanga .16 incidents of fire which killed 85 persons .a boat was capsized in the mid of Bay of Bengal with 20 crews on February 4. Five persons were rescued alive by the Coast Guard and one person was dead but the other 14 crews were missing. 14 incidents in 13 districts was another devastating hazard of February 2019 killed 15
persons and injured three persons


March, 2019

Fire killed 37 Ligtning killed 13

24 incidents of fire in March 2019, which killed 37 persons and injured 143 persons .Another devastating incident took place in Gulshan, Dhaka on March 30, which burnt over 200 shops .Boat capsize took place in five districts in March, 2019 which killed 15 persons . nine incidents of lightning in March, 2019 which killed 13 persons and injured five persons .15 districts,were affected
by eight incidents of storm in March 2019 . Six districts, i.e. Dhaka, Manikganj, Jashore, Chuadanga, Shariatpur and Kushtia were affected by eight incidents of nor’ wester on March 31, 2019 which killed six persons and injured two persons .


April, 2019

Nor’wester in seven district

38 incidents of fire in April 2019, which killed eight persons and injured 30 persons . Lightning took place in nine districts, with 11 incidents that killed 15 .

In Taltali Upazila of Barguna on April 06, 2019; the ceiling of a government primary school collapsed which killed a student of third-grade . two incidents of boat capsize in April, 2019 which killed two persons and injured 14 persons

Nor’wester took place in seven districts, in April, 2019 which killed three persons and one person was missing. The most devastating incident took place in Joypurhat on April 02, 2019 which damaged 460 houses.


May, 2019

Cyclone “FANI”

Cyclone “FANI” killed 10 persons, injured 833 persons, killed 175 domestic animals, damaged 2,363 houses fully and 18,670 houses partially, damaged crop of 1,830 acres fully and1,53,832 acres partially, damaged 21.95 Km of the embankment at 240 places, inundated 59 villages, damaged 129 electric poles and disrupted electricity supply to 81,06,500 households. The estimated overall loss of BDT 536.61 core have been reported due to cyclone “FANI .

20 incidents of fire in May 2019, which killed nine persons and injured 13 persons along with estimated loss of BDT 1 crore .five incidents of wild animal attack in May, 2019 which killed three persons and injured two persons. Four of the attacks were from wild elephants in Chattogram . Lightning took place17 incidents in May, 2019 which killed 26 persons .Nor’wester took place in seven districts,which killed six persons and injured 43 persons


June, 2019

Lightning Killed 68 Person & Train Accident

Lightning took place in 32 districts with 59 incidents in June, 2019 which killed 68 persons, injured 56 persons .19 districts faced 33 incidents of fire in June 2019, which killed one person and injured 37 persons.Nor’wester took place in two districts .

In Kulaura, Moulvibazar on June 23, 2019, Upaban Express train was coming from Sylhet to Dhaka, and five buggies of it veered off the tracks around 11:40pm. In this incident, eight persons were killed and 250 persons injured.

Six districts i.e. Narayanganj, Habiganj, Chattogram, Dhaka and Dinajpur faced waterlogging due to heavy rainfall on June 03, 05, 16, 21 and 27, 2019 respectively.Six districts five incidents of flash flood in June 2019, which killed one person, flooded 52 villages.

An incident of landslide took place in Rangamati on June 02, 2019 in which three persons killed and one person injured. 11 persons were digging mud for construction while they were buried in the udden slide of mud.

June, 2019

July 2019

Monsoon Flood-Hit Bangladesh

Flood took place from July 02 to July 31, 2019, which affected 4,704 villages and 384 Union at 76 Upazilas in 22 districts.Eight incidents of building collapse which killed five persons injured 23 persons. Heavy rainfall took place in Cox’s Bazar on July 09, 2019 in which two persons were killed and 2,000 sheds damaged in Rohingya camps of Ukhiya .
Lightning was the most devastating hazard in terms of death of 45 persons and injury of 22 persons in 29 incidents in 19 districts across the country. Flash flood took place in 19 districts which killed 35 persons with huge damage of properties and crops, and
marooned 2,802,770 persons over the month.35 incidents of fire in July 2019, which killed nine persons, injured 34 persons. Program Upazila of Lalmonirhat district faced the only incident of tornado on 14th July, 2019 in which
one person was killed, 50 persons injured


August 2019

Monsoon Flood Continue

Data also suggested that 114 persons were killed and 300,000 people were displaced for the monsoon flood. Lightning took place in 14 districts. Bridge Collapse in four district in August 2019, which killed 10 persons and injured 22 persons along with an estimated loss of BDT 40 lakh . Lightning took place in 14 districts, in August 2019 which killed 26 persons, injured nine persons, and killed five cows. The highest number of incidents took place in Jamalpur and Faridpur .seven incidents of boat capsize which killed seven persons, four persons .

September 2019

Fire and Lightning strike

The most frequently occurred hazard of this month was fire with 17 incidents in
nine districts which killed three persons, injured 26 persons, killed 2 cows, 6 goats & 100 chicken .Lightning took place in five districts, six incidents in September, 2019 which killed seven persons .Boat capsize took place in six districts in September, 2019 which killed 16 persons,


October 2019

Sudden flood , affected 40,315 households,

Lightning took place in seven districts,nine incidents in October, 2019 which killed 14 persons .A sudden flood took place in 51 unions of 21 upazilas under six districts .
