From long-debunked claims that moon landings were staged to modern disinformation suggesting COVID-19 vaccines contain microchips, conspiracy theories have often spread quickly, sometimes with serious consequences. But a new study offers a groundbreaking solution: artificial intelligence (AI). Researchers have discovered that engaging with an AI chatbot can significantly reduce belief in conspiracy theories, marking a significant shift in how misinformation might be addressed.
AI as a Persuasive Tool for Changing Minds
study, conducted by Dr. Thomas Costello and his colleagues from American University, challenges the widespread notion that once someone falls into the rabbit hole of conspiracy thinking, it’s nearly impossible to bring me back. Participants rated the perceived truth of their conspiracy beliefs on a scale of 0 to 100 before and after their interaction with AI. Results were eye-opening: those who discussed conspiracy beliefs with AI saw an average 20% drop in belief’s perceived validity. Importantly, this effect lasted for at least two months, suggesting AI’s influence wasn’t just a short-term effect.
Costello emphasized personal touch in the interactions: “AI knew in advance what person believed and, because of that, it was able to tailor its persuasion to its precise belief system.” This customization allowed the chatbot to engage in meaningful discussions, appealing to an individual’s specific thought processes and concerns.
Shifting Mindsets: Ripple Effect
the research went beyond simply debunking a single conspiracy theory. The team found that challenging one belief often led participants to question or conspiracy theories they held. Skepticism and Questions
However, we are still challenged to implement this AI-driven solution. Professor Sander van der Linden of the University of Cambridge, who was not involved in the study, raised questions about where individuals in the real world would voluntarily engage with such AI systems. “Question is: would people actively seek out an AI bot to debunk their beliefs, or would they resist such conversations in real-world settings?” he asked.
