Israel Marks Anniversary of Hamas Assault with Intensified Attacks on Gaza, Hezbollah

October 6, 2024 — Israel has launched a major air and ground offensive in North Gaza and southern Lebanon, marking a new escalation in its ongoing conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah.  The assault comes as the country prepares to commemorate the deadly attacks of October 2023 that set the region ablaze.

Intensified operations, which included a strike on a Gaza Mosque sheltering displaced civilians and an overnight bombardment in Beirut’s southern suburbs, are part of Israel’s broader efforts to dismantle militant groups along its borders.  Gaza Health Ministry reported that 19 people were killed in a mosque strike, while 30 airstrikes hit Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon.

Gaza Offensive

In Gaza, Israel’s latest offensive has targeted Jabaliya, a densely populated area with a large refugee camp. Israeli strikes have killed both militants and civilians, according to local reports, as the Israeli military continues its campaign against Hamas.  The mosque attack, which killed 19 men, was described by Israel as a strike on militants, though no supporting evidence has been provided.  Fighting in northern Gaza has left several Israeli soldiers wounded as they engage in ground operations against entrenched Hamas fighters.

Hezbollah Front in Lebanon

Meanwhile, Israel has expanded its operations against Hezbollah, launching airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs. Se strikes follow weeks of intensified fighting, which began after Hezbollah joined the conflict in support of Hamas following last October’s attacks. Hezbollah has retaliated with rocket barrages, causing damage in northern Israeli towns.  The militant group has remained defiant despite the loss of its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah and much of its senior command.  Violence has led to a significant displacement crisis in Lebanon, with over 1.2 million people forced from their homes.

Global Reactions and Memorials

As Israel presses its military campaign, memorial events are being held to mark the anniversary of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of 250 ors.  Ensuing war has claimed over 41,000 lives in Gaza, with women and children comprising a significant portion of casualties.

Protests and rallies have erupted worldwide, with both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrators taking to the streets in cities across Europe, North Africa, and Asia.  Growing tension between global powers is evident as leaders navigate ongoing crises. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a partial arms embargo on Israel to facilitate a ceasefire, a stance that has been met with sharp criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

US Involvement

The United States continues to support Israel’s military efforts while encouraging diplomatic solutions. Vice President Kamala Harris, in a televised interview, emphasized the Biden administration’s commitment to providing Israel with the military assistance it needs while simultaneously pushing for an end to war.

Conclusion

As the conflict enters its second year, Israel’s dual-front offensive in Gaza and Lebanon signals a significant escalation in its war against militant groups.  The mounting civilian toll and increasing displacement underscore the devastating humanitarian impact of ongoing hostilities.
