The United Nations has sought the opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prevent Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. A resolution in this regard was passed by the UN General Assembly on Friday. In the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. Israel withdrew its forces from Gaza in 2005, but it still controls the territory’s borders in alliance with Egypt. The International Court of Justice or ICJ is the world’s largest court and a UNITED NATIONS-based body. However, the ICJ does not have the power to implement the opinion or advice given by this court on the Palestine-Israel issue, even if it is sufficient in terms of importance. After the resolution was tabled in the UN General Assembly on Friday, 87 of the 193 member states of the Council voted in favor of the resolution, 24 member states, including the United States, and 53 abstained from voting.
