SACRAMENTO – Californians will soon have the option to carry their driver’s license or state ID securely on ir mobile devices, Governor Gavin Newsom announced today. This new initiative, a significant step in the state’s ongoing efforts to integrate technology into everyday services, allows residents to store their identification in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.

A Leap Forward in Digital Identity
Governor Newsom highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “We’re partnering with two iconic California companies – Apple and Google – to provide convenient, private, and secure driver’s licenses and ID cards directly on people’s phones. This is a big step in our efforts to better serve all Californians, meeting people where they’re at and with technology people use every day.”
How It Works
Residents will be able to use their digital IDs at select businesses, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) airport security checkpoints, and in certain apps, providing a more flexible and controlled way to verify their identity. The new digital ID system is designed with privacy and security in mind, ensuring that users have more control over how and when they share their personal information.
To date, over 500,000 Californians have already taken advantage of the mDL feature by adding their ID to their phone through the California DMV Wallet app. current pilot program is capped at 1.5 million participants, indicating strong interest and potential for further expansion.
Maintaining Physical IDs
Despite the introduction of digital options, Californians are still required to carry a physical driver’s license or state ID card. However, mDL offers added convenience, particularly for those who frequently need to validate their age or identity at participating venues, including airports and select businesses.
Future Plans and Broader Acceptance
California DMV is working closely with various stakeholders, including financial institutions, retail establishments, law enforcement, and government agencies, to broaden acceptance of the mDL. As part of the efforts, DMV will host two “hackathons” this fall, inviting innovators to explore ways to integrate secure digital identity solutions into our services.
DMV Director Steve Gordon emphasized the agency’s commitment to expanding the availability and acceptance of digital IDs while ensuring that privacy and security remain top priorities.
