Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Direct Untitled AI Thriller Starring Anne Hathaway for T-Street Productions

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to direct an untitled AI thriller for T-Street Productions, the production company of Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman, with Anne Hathaway attached to star, sources confirm to Deadline

Although specific plot details are under wraps, it is known that Gordon-Levitt co-wrote the script with Kieran Fitzgerald, known for his work on the Oliver Stone film Snowden. Both Gordon-Levitt and Fitzgerald share a “story by” credit with Natasha Lyonne, star of Johnson’s critically acclaimed series Poker Face on Peacock.

This project continues a longstanding collaboration between Gordon-Levitt, Johnson, and T-Street. Gordon-Levitt first worked with Johnson on the 2005 neo-noir Brick, a cult classic that marked Johnson’s directorial debut. The two reunited in the sci-fi thriller Looper and again for a guest appearance on Poker Face. T-Street’s Ram Bergman also produced Gordon-Levitt’s 2013 directorial debut, Don Jon, where Johnson provided feedback on the script and edits.

Gordon-Levitt and Hathaway also have a history, having co-starred in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Rises (2012). Hathaway is currently slated to work with Nolan again on a new Universal project, further solidifying her standing in Hollywood.

Rising cultural and creative fascination with artificial intelligence makes this project timely. Studios are increasingly exploring AI-med stories, as evidenced by the recent acquisition of Natan Dotan’s Alignment by Fifth Season for seven figures.

Gordon-Levitt’s career has spanned a variety of genres and roles. He directed and starred in Don Jon, a romantic dramedy that grossed over $40 million, and later created, wrote, and directed Mr. Corman, a dramedy for Apple TV+. Next, he’ll appear in the horror film Pendulum, directed by Mark Heyman and produced by Darren Aronofsky.

Anne Hathaway has built an impressive slate of projects in recent years. Following her success with Michael Showalter’s Idea of You for Amazon, she will reteam with the director on Verity, based on Colleen Hoover’s popular novel. She’s also attached to Amazon’s adaptation of Yesteryear, which she’ll star in and produce. Hathaway will next appear in David Robert Mitchell’s genre film Flowervale Street and has lined up high-profile projects, including James Gray’s crime thriller Paper Tiger and David Lowery’s A24 pop melodrama Mor Mary

T-Street Productions, which recently inked a two-film producing deal with Warner Bros., has a busy slate as well. The company is preparing for the second season of Poker Face and recently completed production on Wake-Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third installment in the Knives Out series for Netflix.

Gordon-Levitt is represented by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Hathaway is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Johnson is with CAA and Lichter, Grossman, and Nichols, while Fitzgerald is repped by WME, Novo Entertainment, Gang, Tyre, and Ramer. Natasha Lyonne is represented by CAA and Schreck Rose Dapello.

As this project gains momentum, it will be interesting to see how it addresses the cultural and ethical implications of AI while showcasing creative synergy between its high-profile collaborators.
