Bangladesh-Iraq relations refer to the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Iraq.
History
After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, Iraq recognized Bangladesh as a sovereign country on July 7, 1972, as the first Arab country to do so. Bangladesh provided troops to patrol the Iran-Iraq border after the Iran-Iraq war as part of the UN Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group . The Bangladesh Army was part of Operation Desert Storm Alliance, which liberated Kuwait from Iraq, and has maintained a military presence in Kuwait ever since.
Bangladesh’s Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Iraqi Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Nassar al-Rubai signed a memorandum of understanding in 2009 to import labor from Bangladesh. Iraq has a residential embassy in Bangladesh. In 2008, Bangladesh expressed support for Iraq’s territorial integrity.
Economic relations
Bangladesh sent migrant workers to Iraq before the Second Gulf War, but the war ended. In 2009, Bangladesh started sending workers to Iraq again. Bangladeshi workers in Iraq have faced harassment and violence from both security forces and insurgents. As of 2016, there are 43,000 Bangladeshis employed in Iraq.
