Probe Agency’s Challenge To Hemant Soren’s Bail Dismissed By Supreme Court – NDTV

Supreme Court dismissed Enforcement Directorate’s petition challenging bail granted to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam.  Jharkhand High Court had granted bail to Soren on June 28, stating that re was no direct evidence of his involvement in the scam.  Supreme Court upheld this decision, describing the High Court’s judgment as “very well-reasoned” and stating that it did not see any need to interfere with the order.

Hemant Soren, leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, was arrested on January 31 on charges of money laundering.  ED accused him of orchestrating a scheme involving fictitious transactions and forged documents to acquire 8.86 acres of land in Ranchi. Soren has consistently denied the allegations, attributing charges to a political conspiracy by the ruling BJP to undermine him ahead of Lok Sabha elections. He was sworn in again as Chief Minister of Jharkhand earlier this month, following a five-month political turmoil that began with his resignation shortly before his arrest.
