The Zamzam Well is a 2400 BC well located in the Wadi Ibrahim or The Valley of Abraham within the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia . It’s one of the active oldest wells in the world. ZamZam regarded as one of the sacred and holiest sites in Islam. The well has been in use for around 4000 years, older than the Religion of Islam. The history of Zamzam Well is part of the Arab History of Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) & have a significant religious value to the Muslims. According to Arab Historian, the origin of Zamzam well is Miraculous and Muslims widely believe Its have Healing Properties. The Quran gives no direct references to its healing properties & origin. These narratives are found in Bible & in Hadith ( Narrative of prophet Mohammad sw ).
The Healing Properties in Zamzam
Muslim widely believe that the water of the Zamzam well is divinely blessed, refreshing and can cure illness. According to modern research Zamzam water is different from other water. Like no bacteria can form at its source, it doesn’t go moldy nor does it change color, taste or smell. In 2001 University of Heidelberg, Germany Institute of Earth Sciences conducted a study on ” Zamzam water ” .They collected Thirty Zamzam water samples. At the end of December 2007, 2008 and 2011 one sample from each of pilgrims was collected directly after their return from Makkah. They found Zamzam water is alkaline and have very low concentrations of the total organic carbon (TOC) .. A 1996 study, Kellas et al found alkaline drinking water plays an important part in ridding the body of mercury and other toxins, alkaline water has been used for improving bone density and healing, controlling gastric functions; improving capacity for aerobic activities and flushing toxins and acidic waste. The alkaline nature of the Zamzam water could explain its healing properties.
Arsenic(As) was found two-three times higher than the WHO standard but the chemical reactions between arsenic and oxygen or nitrate – which are high in Zamzam water – can affect the mobility of trace amounts of arsenic. Doctors use arsenic for cancer therapy, scientist demonstrated arsenic destroys deadly blood cancer by targeting and killing specific proteins that keep the cancer alive (Lyn, 2010) .
Zamzam water with calcium reflects its asserted ability to satisfy both thirst and hunger, while the slightly enriched values of potassium and sodium reflect its alleged ability to affect the human nervous system. The presence of small amounts of Arsenic (As) and Lithium (Li) in Zamzam water and the mixture with other elements like Ca and K in alkaline water may give the water the healing power.
Presence of trace amounts of As and Li in the alkaline water of Zamzam may represent a powerful tool for therapy of several diseases. This may cause the sanctity and holiness of Zamzam water .

ZamZam in Islamic History :
Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) with his wife Hajara and baby Ismail Peace came to Mecca. Under God’s direction,he had left his wife Hajar and their infant son Ismail (PBUH) in the barren desert. , the water that Ibrahim left with them ran out. In her desperate search for water, Hajar ran seven times back and forth in the scorching heat between the two hills of Safa and Marwa to look for water for Ismail who was dying of thirst. The God-sent Arch Angel Angel Gabriel (Gabrial), who scraped the ground, causing the spring to appear. On finding the spring, and fearing that it might run out of the water, Hajar enclosed it in sand and stones The name Zamzam originates from the phrase Zomë Zomë, meaning ‘stop flowing’

Genesis 21: 17-21
17 And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. 18 Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” 19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. 20 And God was with the boy, and he grew up. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow. 21 He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt. aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.
