An alternative to determining the largest and most important banks is the list of global systemically important banks , which is published annually by the Financial Stability Board .
Note that different calculation methods may lead to differences in data. For example, U.S. banks all adopt generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), while the European Union and China both adopt International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) . The largest bank in the world by total assets was the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in 2021 for the eighth year in a row with total assets of approximately 4.3 trillion US dollars.
