Bangladesh Navy's Type 053H3 Frigates

Bangladsh Navy received two Type 053H3 Guided-Missile Frigate from China . The Bangladesh Navy Jiangwei-II frigates is armed with HQ-7 Surface-to-air missile system . Including this two advance ship Bangladesh Navy now operates Six Frigates .

Bangladesh Navy  procured the two China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy frigates under a deal signed in June 2018. The frigates were transferred in a ceremony held on 18 December 2019 at the Shenjia Shipyard in Shanghai . Navy also signed a contract for two more Type 053H3 frigates In September 2019 expected to arrive in 2020 .

The two frigates will be renamed BNS Umer Farroq and BNS Abu Ubaidah once in Bangladesh Navy . The Bangladesh Navy currently operates Six frigates; an Type 053H1 (Jianghu II)-class ship acquired from China in 1989, a modified Ulsan-class platform procured from South Korea in 2001, and two former PLAN Type 053H2 (Jianghu III)-class vessels transferred from China in 2014. BN also operates two larger, 3,250-ton former US Coastguard Hamilton-class cutters, each armed with a 76 mm Oto Melara gun, acquired in 2013 and 2015 .

Features of the Type 053H3 or  Jiangwei-II

The Type 053 frigate is primarily intended for coastal patrol role. Its also have anti-air warfare (AAW) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) System. The Type 053H3 Frigates is powered by a combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) propulsion unit. Its provide a maximum speed of 27kt and range of 4,000 nautical miles at 18kt speed .

Type 053H3 Frigates   were built by Hudong Shipyard and Guangzhou Huangpu Shipyard between 1996 and 2005. The frigate has a stern helicopter deck to accommodate a medium size helicopter .

The air defence weapon system is an 8-cell HongQi-7 short range surface-to-air missile (SAM). The missile uses line-of-sight guidance to engage aircraft flying within the range of 8 to 12km . The YJ-83 sea-skimming missile can carry a 165kg warhead to a range of 180km .The main naval gun system has a firing rate of 18 rounds per minute for a range of 22km.
