Colombo, Sri Lanka — In response to intelligence reports indicating a potential threat to Israeli tourists, Sri Lankan police have detained three suspects amid heightened security measures across the country. This move, confirmed by Public Security and Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath, follows recent U.S. warnings and escalated security presence in tourist areas, especially Arugam Bay—a favored surfing spot.
Minister Herath, emphasizing the sensitive nature of the case, refrained from releasing detailed information on suspects to prevent hindering the investigation. Officials indicated that intelligence obtained from foreign sources hinted at possible disturbances targeting areas where Israeli nationals hold religious gatherings. Currently, approximately 575 Israeli tourists are reported to be in the country.
U.S. Embassy in Colombo also issued an alert, advising American citizens to avoid Arugam Bay due to credible information suggesting a potential attack. In turn, Israel’s government urged its citizens to leave coastal areas in the country’s south and western regions immediately.
With Sri Lanka’s tourism sector poised for a comeback after years of economic hardships, authorities are taking extensive measures, including roadblocks, vehicle checks, and deployment of army and navy personnel, to ensure visitor safety during year-end tourist influx.
