Bangladesh-Italy relations
Bangladesh-Italy relations are related to the foreign relations of Bangladesh and Italy . Bangladesh is maintaining the embassy in Rome and Italy has an embassy in Dhaka .
History
Italy officially established relations with Bangladesh in 1972. In 1974, Italy was one of the sponsors of Bangladesh’s admission to the United Nations. In 2014, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina paid a state visit to Italy.
Education and technical assistance
In 2000, an agreement on “Scientific and Technological Cooperation” was signed between Bangladesh and Italy. Under the agreement, the two countries have been exchanging study grants with scientists, researchers and technologists. Italy continues to recruit an average of 25 Bangladeshi researchers a year to study at the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics.
Economic Relations
Bangladesh and Italy have formed the ‘Italy-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI)’ to strengthen bilateral economic ties. Between 2000 and 2008, bilateral trade between the two countries increased by more than 200%. Total bilateral trade stood at 1.26 billion as of 2012, of which Bangladesh’s exports to Italy stood at ০ 1.036 billion. Bangladesh’s main export items to Italy are frozen food, agricultural products, tea, leather, raw jute, jute products, knitwear, knitted garments etc. Italy’s major export items include machinery, electronic goods, vehicles, aircraft, ships and related transportation equipment.
