Lalmonihat Airport was built by the British in 1931, It was used by the US- British allied force in second world war. During wartime, It was the second-largest airport in Asia. After 1958 test runs of flight takeoff and landing have been successfully completed at the Airport on March 12, 2019, by Bangladesh Air Force. On 28 February 2019 Bangladesh Government established its First Aviation & Aerospace University in Lalmonirhat Airport. Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) is planning to invest $5 billion to set up the aircraft repairing Facility in Lalmonirhat Airport.

History of lalmonirhat Airport
During the Second World War, the then British built the ‘Lalmonirhat Airport’ on some 1,166 acres of land. Lalmonihat military airstrips served as base for the RAF Third Tactical Air Force throughout World War II. In 1958, the airport had launched its operation for a short time. After Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, a decision was taken to turn it into a BAF headquarters .

with a vision of ” To become a leading international university in the field of aviation, space and technological studies through excellence” Bangladesh First arespace University started its journey in February 2019. AIR VICE MARSHAL AHM FAZLUL HAQUE, of Bangladesh Airforce . Bangladesh Government already establishes an Aviation University in the Base. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University (BSMRAAU) will be established at Lalmonirhat Airport soon. Academic activities would start from January next year with undergraduate (honors) and postgraduate level courses at the university. Bangladesh Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed said “Activities of the university began officially through the appointment of its vice-chancellor, pro-VC, registrar, treasurers and some other high officials on May 6 this year,”
The proposed aircraft repairing and maintaining the facility at the airbase in Lalmonirhat is underway.

According to various sources, in 1931, then British Government constructed the airport by acquiring 166 acre of land in Mahendranagar and Harati union of Lalmanirhat Sadar upazila.
