Seven MIlitant were sentenced to death Wednesday by a court in Bangladesh for helping to organize the 2016 Dhaka terror attack . Since the attack, Bangladesh authorities have led a massive crackdown on militants .More than 100 extremists militant were killed and nearly 1,000 others arrested in various anti-terror operations that followed the attack .
2016 Dhaka Terror Attack
on July 1, 2016 five militants armed with assault rifles and machetes , took hostages and opened fire on a restaurant at Dhaka . Twenty hostages were killed Nine Italians, seven Japanese, an American and an Indian were among the dead .Two police officers died trying to fight the militants .
The Operation Thunderbolt
Bangladesh Army commandos stormed the restaurant and rescued 13 hostages, killing all five militants . They belong to the group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh – a extremist terror group in Bangladesh . Police investigation later found involvement of 21 militants in the attack. Five of them were killed in the standoff, eight in anti-militancy drives later .
According to the charge sheet, the suspects carried out the attack to destabilise the country. They also wanted to put the government under pressure, make investors and foreign consultants leave the country and destroy the economy.
