Apple Re-Releases iOS 18 Developer Beta 4 and iPad iOS 18 Developer Beta 4

Background

Apple recently released the fourth Developer Beta versions of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, both with build number 22A5316j. However, a serious issue was discovered in the betas, prompting Apple to address the problem swiftly. As a result, Apple has re-released updated versions of both betas with a new build number, 22A5316K, correcting the reported issue.

What to Do If You’re Running Developer Beta

If you have iOS 18 Developer Beta 4 or iPadOS 18 Developer Beta 4 installed, you should update to the new build (22A5316K) to benefit from the fix. Here’s how to check for and install the latest update:

  1. Go to Settings: Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  1. Select General: Navigate to General.
  1. Tap Software Update: Check for the latest update and install it if available.

Upcoming Public Beta Release

re-release of Developer Beta versions suggests that Apple might soon release iOS 18 Public Beta 2. This update is expected as early as Monday.  Public Beta typically follows Developer Beta, incorporating fixes and adjustments based on feedback from developers and early users.

Developer vs. Public Beta

Apple initially releases Developer Betas to developers who test new features and report bugs. Company n issues a revised version if significant issues are identified.  Public Beta, available to a broader audience, includes several fixes and is usually more stable.

Historically, Apple charged $99 for a developer account, but this year, the fee was waived, allowing non-developers to access Developer Betas. Despite this, it’s often safer to use Public Beta, as it has undergone more testing.

Features in the Latest Beta

Current Features

  • Customizable Home Screen: Customize app icon colors and positions.
  • Scheduled iMessages: Set specific times to send iMessages.
  • RCS Messaging: Support for Rich Communication Services.
  • Lock Screen Shortcuts: Open any app directly from the Lock Screen.

Issues Noted

  • Battery Life: Some users, including those on iOS 18 Public Beta, have reported reduced battery life.

Recommendations Before Installing

  1. Backup Your Device: Ensure your device is fully backed up before installing any beta. This is crucial to avoid data loss if you need to revert to the stable version.
  1. Consider Device Use: If you rely on your device for daily tasks, think twice before installing a beta. Betas can have bugs that affect key functionalities.

Stable Release

Apple is expected to release a stable version of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 in September, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 16 series.

By staying updated with the latest betas and following the recommendations, you can enjoy new features of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 while minimizing the risk of encountering significant issues.
