Bangladesh government has promoted SM Shafiuddin Ahmed as general and given him the responsibility of 17th chief of Bangladesh Army for three years from June 24, 2021.
The Defense Ministry issued the order on Thursday. SM Shafiuddin Ahmed will replace current army chief General Aziz Ahmed .Gen Aziz took over the Command of the Bangladesh Army as the 16th Chief of Army Staff on June 25, 2018.
The new army chief has real battle experience. SM Shafiuddin Ahmed served as a United Nations peacekeeper in Mozambique for 18 months in the 1990s. Later, Shafiuddin served as Deputy Force Commander in UN peacekeeping missions in the Central African Republic from 2014 to 2016.
SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, a son of a freedom fighter family from Khulna, was commissioned in the Infantry Corps of the Bangladesh Army on 23 December 1973 through the Ninth BMA Long Course .
In his long military career, Lt Gen Shafiuddin has also served as director-general of the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies and a senior directing staff member of the National Defence College.
